Full membership
If you want to take part in races and club training
sessions during the year, this is the membership
for you. In addition, you can access all the private
content of our site, post questions on our forum,
make discount purchases at our preferred stores, use
our useful links to find sports doctors, physiotherapists
and podiatrists, get a VO2 test, purchase expaTRIés
merchandise (including clothing by Craft) at discount
rates and stay in touch with what’s on in the English-
speaking triathlon community in France. With full
membership you can also be elected to any of the posts
within the club, vote at the Annual General Meeting and
take an active part in our growth.
Social membership
We’re a small club and do not yet have access to the facilities of some of the bigger triathlon clubs in France. For this reason, we have a number of people who take full membership with French clubs but who stay connected with expaTRIés through social membership. As a social member you can log on to the private content of our site, post questions on our forum, make discount purchases at our preferred stores, use our useful links to find sports doctors, physiotherapists and podiatrists, get a VO2 test, purchase expaTRIés merchandise at member rates and generally keep in touch with what’s on in the English-speaking triathlon community in France.
Not a triathlete, but interested in running a club? Join as a social member and you can be elected to any of the posts within the club, vote at the Annual General Meeting and take an active part in our project.
Is there someone in your life who takes a keen interest in your training, helps get your diet right, counsels you through the difficulties of work/training balance and then stands for hours on the roadside cheering you on? This is a likely candidate for social membership – a great way to feel included, to share concerns with other triathlon supporters and generally to foster a very positive triathlon environment.
As a social member you may swim, bike or run with full members at one of the many training sessions expaTRIés organises, but you do so at your own cost and under your own responsibility.
Social members are NOT entitled to take part in competitions unless they have an individual triathlon license, take a daily license or have a license through another club.
We’re delighted you’re on this page...
However, before we get into membership fees and forms, please check out different membership types to make sure you get exactly what you want from your membership. Afterwards, we suggest a quick review of the different license types to familiarise yourself with the system of licences and which one is right for you.

What’s this triathlon license thing?
Understanding the system of licenses is a big step to
unlocking the secrets of federated sport in France. In
many countries triathlon clubs are simply informal
clusters of like-minded athletes who get together, share
kit and experiences but are not bound by the regulations
of the sport’s governing body. Furthermore, athletes in
those countries generally insure themselves against
personal injury and damage to sporting goods and
property. Not in France.
In France, all triathlon clubs are affiliated to and governed
by the rules of the French Triathlon Federation (FFTRI).
The rules are complex and impose strict financial, sporting and ethical requirements on clubs. Triathlon clubs pay a license fee to their regional league which administers the rules of the FFTRI. In the case of expaTRIés Triathlon Club, the Ligue Ile de France is our regional league.
As regards insurance you should know that your license is also an insurance policy covering personal injury, civil responsibility as well as theft and damage of equipment – for more details please refer to the License Application Translation. If, as a member of expaTRIés Triathlon Club, you are involved in a road accident whilst training on an official club ride, you may be entitled to make an insurance claim through your license. If you are not a member of the club but are injured by a car whilst sitting-in on a ride, you will only be covered by your own personal insurance.
Licenses are valid from October 1 of a given year through September 30 of the following year.
Full license
This entitles you to train and to take part in all triathlon events in France.
Training license
This does not entitle you to take part in any swim, bike, run or triathlon competition in France. It does, however, entitle you to train with the club and benefit from additional insurance on official club trainings - for more details please refer to the License Application Translation. Honestly, this type of license is aimed at the older athlete who would like to get some fresh air on a Sunday bike ride and benefit from a little insurance cover in the process. We like to think that if you’re on this site, you are probably keen to race, so stick with the full license.
Junior license
Sorry, we’re mostly 30-somethings and our club by-laws prohibit junior membership for legal and insurance reasons. However, if you are under 18 and want to compete in triathlon in France, contact us and we’ll try and put you in touch with one of the many qualified training clubs whose primary objective is youth development.
Physically Disabled athletes license
Currently, we do not have any physically disabled athletes. If you are interested in competing in triathlon in France but are a physically disabled athlete contact us and we’ll try and help you find the best access to the sport in France.
Administrator license
This type of membership is only for elected officials of expaTRIés Triathlon Club who are also social members.
