Bewt Triathlon, Kent UK - 8 August 2015 - by Sean Hurst With villages around the course named Lamberhurst, Wadhurst and Ticehurst this race had my name written all over it! A rather long 400km drive via Eurotunnel saw us arrive in the beautiful Kent countryside. After checking into the pub where we were staying we then drove the bike course only to realise that the route went past the pub's front door which, by luck rather than judgement, made our choice of accommodation perfect! But no drinking with the locals in the beer garden unfortunately as we were due to be up at 5.20am for a 7.30am race start. There was a slight delay to the swim start due to mist on the reservoir which made it impossible to see the course marks but we didn't have to wait long to get going. A two lap rolling bike course around the above named villages was made all the more interesting by going downhill on single lane roads which were completely dark due to canopies formed by trees and with cars and vans coming the other way! The run was really no fun at all though - 4 loops out to the end of the dam wall and back with steep sections at both ends and it certainly wasn't my finest running moment. Cat caught up with one of the Tri Surrey gang, Alice, who she'd met at Les Stables just a fortnight before and it's always good to meet friends at faraway competitions. For the second time this year it became clear that these smaller 'local' competitions are some of the toughest events around with the best competitors from the regional clubs competing. And nearly 50% of the competitors were veteran males making it even harder.
